New Hurricane Katrina Book for Children Available Now
Jackson, Mississippi – Acorn Hill Press is pleased to announce the release of Erin and Katrina by Nan Sugg. This beautifully illustrated chapter book for children depicts a different view point of the storm.
Many people experienced the wrath of Hurricane Katrina, but most were well inland of where the storm actually came ashore. Erin and Katrina is the account of one little girl and her view of Hurricane Katrina from central Mississippi.
Erin watches the trees as they are tossed, bent, and broken in the wind. Seeing a tree fall and the squirrels and birds scatter causes her concern about the wildlife. When the power goes out, she and her family eat by candlelight. She goes to bed with the sounds of the wind and rain outside.
But the next morning, her world is sparkling with sunshine on rain droplets as she and her parents begin to clean up the debris from the storm. The neighbors are doing the same thing.
Erin’s mother helps her transfer concern for the animals to concern for people as they go to their church where they find refugees from the storm. There they offer comfort and hope to victims of Katrina.
Erin’s experiences are the same that many people shared during Hurricane Katrina and the days that followed. Reading and talking about this book with children who experienced the storm may help them to talk about their own memories of it.
